Ecstasy Use on the Rise in San Diego
According to recent data made available from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), the use of ecstasy is on the rise among juveniles. Interviews conducted with San Diego juveniles who had recently been arrested showed that ecstasy was the second most frequently used drug, next to marijuana. Seventy percent of those juveniles reported that ecstasy was easy to get while about sixty-three percent of those interviewed stated that they believed the drug could be harmful to them. Marijuana is the most frequently used drug among juvenile arrestees and is not considered to be a harmful drug by a quarter of teens interviewed.
The trends in San Diego follow national trends showing greater distribution and use of ecstasy especially in the Southwest, Southeast and Great Lake Regions. There is also a trend that includes the first significant use by Hispanic and African American teens. The drug has the effect of distorting perception and increasing energy and feelings of euphoria.
