Governor Approves Measure To Grant Incapacitated Inmates Early Parole
Governor Schwarzenegger recently signed a bill that allows for the early release of some prisoners. California could save at least $200 million by releasing physically incapacitated or comatose prisoners on early parole. An article recently published in the L.A. Times reported a possibility of 32 inmates being released immediately. Twenty one of whom are being cared for in facilities costing nearly $6,000 per day.
SB 1399, also known as the medical parole bill, targets those prisoners who would pose no threat to society. Many of these inmates, though guarded 24 hours a day are confined to hospital beds.
While the governor assures that the state Board of Parole Hearings will approve all releases and that those who have been sentenced to death or life with out parole are not eligible, foes of the measure maintain that in order to save more money, prison officials will release too many prisoners.
