Insurance Premiums May Increase Despite High Profits
Health Insurance, Health Care, Obamacare...It's on our minds. With a flat economy, many Americans are forgoing medical treatment. The New York Times reports that the delay or postponement in Americans receiving health care is boosting the profits of major insurers.
As Americans are limiting and in some instances, even forgoing health care, major insurance companies are reporting higher profits. Some companies' first quarter earnings were actually thirty percent higher than projected.
Higher deductibles and co-payments but reduced benefits are likely the cause of the profit boost, yet major insurance companies are pushing for higher premiums. Insurers would have us believe that as the economy improves, there will be an onslaught of people seeking medical care that they have put off for the past three years. Others believe that the insurance companies are trying to offset the cost that will be incurred when President Obama's health care plan takes effect.
