A conviction for a felony or misdemeanor can impair an individual's ability to obtain and retain a license to practice almost every profession regulated by the State of California. Licenses which can be denied or revoked as a result of a conviction include those for accountants, chiropractors, nurses, nursing home administrators, pharmacists, real estate brokers, sales agents and teachers.
In order to impair a professional's license, the conviction must usually be substantially related to the qualifications, functions, or duties of the profession. Whether a felony or misdemeanor is substantially related to the qualifications, functions or duties of a profession is determined by the Courts on a case-by-case basis.
