Long Awaited Victory For Two California Nurses
The California Board of Registered Nurses has cleared the names of Thomas Zoltanski and Bradley Sidwell, two California Shock Trauma Air Rescue (CALSTAR) nurses. Zoltanski and Sidwell faced disciplinary charges when they performed a complex procedure called a cricothyrotomy during a flight to a hospital.
Quinton Jones, a Woodland, California bus driver, passed out behind the wheel of his bus causing him to be ejected through the windshield. Jones was being taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital when the two nurses determined that his airway was blocked. After other attempts at creating an airway failed, the nurses chose to perform the cricothyrotomy.
Jones was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Yolo County Coroner's office concluded that the two nurses failed to do the procedure correctly, causing collateral damage to Jones' throat, thereby causing the bus driver's death.
In September, 2010, fifteen days of testimony were heard, including that of an autopsy pathologist. After hearing all of the evidence, the California Board of Registered Nurses cleared the names of Zoltanski and Sidwell.
The board found convincing evidence that the collateral damage occurred when Jones was thrown from the bus. Furthermore concluding that the procedure was performed correctly and was appropriate given the circumstances.
