Medical Group Supports the Legalization of Marijuana
Even though the California Medical Association (CMA) initially opposed the decriminalization of possessing and using marijuana for medicinal purposes, it has since changed its stance. At the annual meeting of the CMA in October, the group officially adopted the policy that calls for the legalization of marijuana use.
Controlled substances such as marijuana are governed by both state and federal law. When California's Proposition 215 passed, it enabled Californians to use the drug for medicinal purposes pursuant to state law. However, Proposition 215 did not effect federal law. Consequently, it is still a Federal crime to sell or possess marijuana. Doctors supporting the CMA's decision point out that physicians are thus forced to choose if they should prescribe a drug that is against Federal law.
The CMA represents more than 35,000 California doctors and claims to be the first major medical association in the country to support the legalization of marijuana.
