Nursing Board Approves Fabricated Course
Like many professionals, California nurses take continuing education courses.  The state requires them to take thirty hours of classes every two years.  Like many professional boards, the nursing board audits the education courses.  However, it has been years since the last audit of the nursing board's approved continuing education providers.

The BRN approved a continuing education course submitted by the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry for a class that not only doesn't exist, but also highlighted non-medical ideas.  The course titles included embellished names for furniture moving, divination through human entrails and a word that the authors actually made up.

In response, the Senate Business and Professional Committee will likely propose that the BRN not only find practical ways to audit continuing education courses but also require nurses to "periodically demonstrate ongoing clinical competence as required for licensure renewal."
