State Government and Law Enforcement Seek To Curb Drop Out Rate
Until recently, tracking the number of students who drop out of the California Public School System has been daunting, to say the least.  Although efforts had been made, numbers have been grossly underestimated.  Law enforcement, school administration and now, state government begin to focus on tracking drop out trends, hopefully alleviating this problem.

Studies support what Los Angeles Sheriff Leroy Baca believes, "Dropout prevention is crime prevention."  Baca is the Chairman of the Board of Fight Crime:  Invest in Kids– a bipartisan, anti-crime organization.  High school dropouts are three and one-half times more likely to be arrested than high school graduates and far more likely to be jailed or imprisoned.  In July 2008, California's first true count of dropout rates, reports revealed that a staggering one in four kids quit school.

By signing SB 651, Governor Schwarzenegger has put into action a plan that will require the California Department of Education to produce an annual report on dropouts.  These reports will identify trends in student dropouts and help officials target early warning signs, such as truancy.  Identifying potential dropouts will enable teachers and school officials to intervene and encourage students to stay in school.
