Well Known Carlsbad Church Survives and Thrives Despite Media Turmoil
About a year and a half ago, I wrote about the "safety policy" that Pilgrim United Church of Christ wrote and employed for their congregation.  This month marks the 4 year anniversary of the small church's efforts to find a way for literally, all to be welcome.

A convicted child molester had asked if he could attend services at the church.  Reverend Madison Shockley was in a bind.  Understanding the delicate balance that sometimes exists, he was determined to find a way to include everyone in his sermons while protecting others.  In a recent interview given to Logan Jenkins, Shockley remembers the dilemma he faced, “If you shut the door,” a forgiving faction said, “I’m out of here.” Others said, “If you let him in, I’m out of here.”

By writing and implementing the "safe-church" policy, he was able to find a medium that most seemed to be able to agree to.  About ten families still left the church, even though some of them have since returned.
